A painfully sad and tense novel, but beautifully told. The characters are richly written and will leave you asking for more because the well feels quite deep. I gave it 4 out of 5 because I had to read it for school, and the triggering content made it difficult to finish and process. The complete lack of quotation marks and rarely used paragraph breaks was a little tricky to get used to, but it wasn't a huge deterrent. And the book led to lively class discussions, too.

It was fine. Hard to understand and keep track of at times. Switching to the friend 6 years later was a weird choice. Also, I'm upset we never found out why Niru was so mad that night in the first place.

When I tell you this is the perfect book to make you feel something , I mean it. I was crying, screaming, and gasping for air. This book is full of so many deep and inspiring perspectives, that it really get you thinking. The story follows the struggles of a Nigerian Boy that discovers he's gay and all the problems that arise with that realization. he goes through to many earth shattering situations , and author is amazing at giving you insight what its really like to be in the situation. It really feels as though You are walking in the main character's shoes, which only makes reading this book more emotion invoking.

Damn, Uzodinma Iweala sure knows how to write sad stuff. As with Beasts of No Nation, it's hard for me to say that I "liked" the book or that I would recommend it because the content is so upsetting. I will say that it was beautifully written, though.
