This whole review will contain spoileds because wth did I just read.

Very reminiscent of lord of the flies, with the gang of pre pubescent boys basically on their own (one of the boys parents are never home) and creating their own organisation with twisted rules and ideals. It's clear that the 'chief' has some twisted fantasies and the others just follow along to gain his respect and favour.
weird Oedipus complex, he peeks in on his mother when she's in her room naked. And also sees her when she's having sex. And then when this is found out, ryuji brushes it aside so the boy will like him? Make it make sense.

Graphic animal abuse and killing for their curiosity and fantasy.

Hypocritical values- resent their father's for being abusive and beating them but then resents ryuji for being 'soft and romantic'.

I hated the
how the storys ending was left to interpretation. Does he die? Doesn't he?

It was hard to follow along to at times, I felt like there were so many weird tangents and I found myself skipping chunks of randomness to get back into the story.

All in all, really was not my type of story. I would not recommend this. It dragged and was a pain to get through.

i'm normally someone who loves lots of descriptions and setting detailed scenes - but this book had way, way too much of it. cut out the (very repetitive) descriptions of the sea, sky and ships and 1/3 of the book would be gone. also, i know the central theme is sailing / the sea / ships, but a totally excessive amount of nautical jargon is used, to the point that it's very frustrating and impossible to research every single one.

otherwise, it has some beautiful prose and a dark, intriguing story, but the above issues made it difficult to stay engaged and a bit of a slog at times. the character of fusako was also underdeveloped and underutilised.

There is a lot of substance in this book, and a lot of interesting points, but it wasn't really for me. Maybe I don't have the brain capacity to understand a lot of what this book is trying to say, or I just got bored. I can see how someone may love this book though!

An already dark and disturbing story made downright creepy when contextualised with Mishima's views and actions. Beautifully and lyrically descriptive language, if somewhat drawn-out at times. Overall, really interesting, but I sometimes felt the plot seemed slightly shallow?
