I am a bit conflicted about this book. I am not saying it is not a good one. I am saying it is not as good as The Night Olivia Fell.
The plot is definitely interesting and it keeps you going and keeps you guessing. There are things that are a bit predictable and there are twists that one would not see them coming.
Overall an interesting story but there is too much drama, too much second guessing, too much internal chatter, too much doubt.

Overall a good read. If you have the choice, read this book before The Night Olivia Fell.

i didn't know but also kind of did know where this was going but in the best way. i don't think the reveal was necessarily a twist since i had my doubts about the character pretty early on but i didn't expect them to be as unhinged as they were so bonus for that. honestly i just think this was a solid read. i do think eva acted immaturely a lot though for being like 29/30. her impulse trip to london was chaotic and could've been done better

Eva Hansen wakes in the hospital after being struck by lightning and discovers her mother, Kat, has been murdered. Eva was found unconscious down the street. She can’t remember what happened but the police are highly suspicious of her. Determined to clear her name, Eva heads from Seattle to London—Kat’s former home—for answers. But as she unravels her mother’s carefully held secrets, Eva soon realizes that someone doesn’t want her to know the truth. And with violent memories beginning to emerge, Eva doesn’t know who to trust. Least of all herself.

review: Behind Every Lie is told in alternating perspectives between Eva’s search for answers and Kat’s mysterious past. This book kept me on my toes guessing what actually happened that fateful night and the ending wrapped everything up nicely, although a bit predictably. I do think the characters lacked a bit of emotion, given everything that was happening to them, but otherwise it was an enjoyable book. If you’re looking for a twisty, suspenseful book pick up this one soon! rating: 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️

Thanks to Netgalley for letting me read this early! This story was twisty and I didn’t want to put it down. Eva woke up in the hospital after being hit by lightening only to learn her mother has been murdered and she is a suspect. Now she has to piece together memories of that night and unravel the truth about her past.

There were so many turns to this story. I had so many theories on who the killer was that I literally changed my mind 10 times about the final outcome. I did see a few of the twists coming pretty early on, but the book was still very enjoyable. I like seeing a story unravel and try to see if I picked up on all of the Easter egg clues that were left by the author. The reader doesn’t know if Eva is crazy or if the killer is framing her and making her think she is crazy. No one in the story is particularly reliable and those are my favorites. Everyone was a suspect.

The story began with a nice, light, happy feeling until little pieces of secrets begin to drop at a celebratory lunch with Eva, Kat (her mom) and Lily (her mom's best friend). The story is set up. The next thing, Eva wakes up in a hospital with no memory of what happened and how she got there. She has to start piecing together flickers of memory, huge weights of self doubt and anxiety ridden bouts of paranoia that are not like her at all. She has become a broken vessel and desperately wants to become whole. To remember. How hard it was to remember. This passage is one her mom has tenderly expressed to her: "I'm not entirely certain one can ever become unbroken, but I do know we can be strong and brave and broken and whole all at the same time. It's called being human." Eva has so many unanswered questions and who does she trust?

This story is written in two different POVs. One is Eva's and the other is her mother, Kat's. Eva's is in current time and Kat's is 25 years earlier. It was full of thrilling suspense, unexpected twists and turns, and surprises I said, "Wait! What?" Just when I thought a piece was going to fit, it doesn't. Just when I think I have it figured out, I don't. I kept reading to find how it was all going to play out....until the pieces became a whole.
At the end I did think how did that many things happen to one person....but its a fiction story -move on :-)

While there are a few twists that make this one different from the other Novels like this, it ultimately delves back into the formulaic tropes that most, quite possibly all, mystery novels like this. Spoilers for all mystery novels like this one:

The Boyfriend/Fiancée/Husband/Ex is or was gaslighting the protagonist. There will be unique twists to throw you off the trail, but ultimately they were the one responsible for planning or committing the murder/crime.

This book lost my interest more than a few times, it was really slow to start and took so many turns I got whiplash. Each being more and more of a stretch into the weird. While I could see the ending a mile away it was detailed well, and wrapped up nicely.

I received a free copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
