This is a well-written book with many delightful passages describing people and settings. One of my favorite characters is Baba. Although not fully named, she's Baba Yaga, a witch famous in Slavic mythology. (The house with chicken feet gives it away.) I enjoyed the unique perspective of this witch as Earth Mother, more good than bad. The persona reminds me a lot of Bulgarian healers, who use herbs and spells.
The story was engaging and the characters well-developed, and multi-dimensional--with both good and bad traits. It was easy to get caught up in the story and keep reading. Although complete in itself, the story leaves you with a lead-in to the next book.
