Unfortunately, this book was a real let down.
  • We got very little emotional depth and given all the horrors depicted in this book, that was disappointing.
  • There was pretty graphic depiction of child SA that is really and TRULY only shown to illustrate how horrendous it was to be a girl and “low class” people in the 1600s but I PROMISE the rest of the story depicts that without a young girl needing to be r*ped on page. It had ZERO ties to the plot and was so unnecessary.
  • The Climax of this story was anticlimactic but, also, there was very little build up to it so, I guess?
  • The ending was basically an info dump, which I always dislike but, in a 266 page book? Why?

Knowing little about the Mayflower and the Plymouth Colony, I was interested to learn more. History tells the stories written by educated men - we never hear about women, the lower classes, children. This book takes a murder and trial that happened in 1630 and fictionalizes relationships, filling in all the missing pieces.

The story is told primarily from three different perspectives: Alice Bradford, the wife of the governor, and John and Eleanor Billington, formerly indentured servants who are unhappy with the way the Colony is run. We finally get to see the lives of women and of lower class people, and it gives us a fresh look into our dusty recollections of the Pilgrims from high school American History classes.

An interesting story and a clever way to tell it. I really liked this.

Don’t waste your money on this book. While I think the story may have been interesting, the storytelling doesn’t do it justice. The writing is slow paced and doesn’t help show the characters flaws. I liked the cover, so it got an extra point.
