What a poetry treat! I have previously read another of this author’s books, “Lac du Mort” and enjoyed it immensely, so wanting to broaden my horizons for October, I decided I was going to try a bit of poetry. This collection did not disappoint.
Author Joanne Van Leerdam shows off her considerable talent in multiple meters, both rhyming and free verse. I especially enjoyed “Mirror, Mirror”, a fairy tale inspired poem in rhyming verse with some clever twists at the end. Some poems were thoughtful and pensive (“Moonlight Love” and “Sunset Rendezvous” struck lovely notes that were quite sensual) while others were just delightful for their clever wordplay, like “Frost and Fire” or “New” which had a wonderful message of rebirth. The collection’s theme of “smoke and shadows” comes into play for many of the works, with fire, shadows, and secrecy been touched on throughout. It’s delightfully done and perfect for indulging in with a pumpkin spice latte on a cool autumn day!
