couldn't really relate to the characters. felt like a prologue to a different series. worldbuilding suggests that whatever series it is will be interesting

I basically knew where this was going to go because of the person who told me to read it (yes, years ago, I'M SORRY), and I think knowing the ending kind of set me up to care less about the characters. I found the style to be not something I'm super into as well, so this was just alright, unfortunately.

Wild, brutal, genius.

Central focus or no, this book has a lot to demonstrate about the nature of empires and colonialism. I'll certainly be looking at history in new ways.

Love this book for lgbt+ representation and bringing to light the ways in which persecution can be total and inescapable. Love that it never explains more than it needs to; and am utterly impressed by any fantasy world that can captivate me without a single depiction of magic (yet?)

Going to need a breather, but already looking forward to the sequels!

A gluttonous tale of politics, power, strategy, revenge, and self. I found myself racing beside Baru as fast as her choices for survival and success. A complex and subversive story woven with intrigue

I’m not sure I could ever recover from this book, halfway through I was so excited to recommend it to friends I thought would enjoy it and now I just think it would be cruel. This book tore me apart and I hated it as much as I loved it. I am undone and unsure how tom continue. But I need to know the rest of Baru’s story. Need the heartache I’m sure Seth is going to provide.
