This is a book you really need to read at least twice to appreciate.

I never know what’s going on in these books but I enjoy them anyway

Honestly, this is one of the best books I have ever read. Tamsyn Muir has perfectly crafted and curated each chapter in this incredible story. I loved the pace, even if it was a bit slow, and found myself truly savoring each moment. I adore these characters, and it is heartbreaking to watch what they go through. But Muir handles this in such a unique and humorous way, without losing any depth and honesty. I wish I could reread this for the first time again, even though I finished it moments ago. I cannot wait to see what else this author has cooked up in the remained of this series!! Thank you for changing my life, Tamsyn Muir. Now I’m going to go make the best damn soup.

While it's a little heavy handed on the dialogue explanations of the magic system and world building, I did have an easier time keeping track of the secondary characters. I agree that just accepting that you are going to be confused helps navigate the disjointed timelines. (Some fandom osmosis also helped me keep up, too tbh) I am fascinated by a depiction of god as a flawed and selfish individual who probably shouldn't actually be worshiped. I'm going to need to sit with this one for a while.

I found this book a little harder to follow than the first. It might be because I listened to it on audio rather than reading it. Or it could be because Harrow decided to fuck with the timeline of the first book. I still enjoyed it, especially towards the end, and will definitely be reading the sequel.

I knew before reading this that the plot would not make sense until 2/3 trough, so I was prepared for the confusion.
The finale was something else and bumped my rating from 4 to 5 stars, incredibly satisfying to unwind all the what-the-fuck-is-going-on.
But: check trigger warnings before reading, like there’s a lot of really graphic stuff.
Also maybe not a book anyone should read during an active psychotic episode (this is not a joke).
