Despite satisfying character development and an ambitious timeline, this became formulaic and one-note for me. It got boring and predictable real quick. I wonder if the translation might’ve contributed to my feelings on this? Not sure, but wouldn’t recommend.

Books like Violeta remind me that we're all human beings who sin and make mistakes. They form us, reshape us. They're necessary for us all to grow and it's ok. No matter what we do or who we are, we all have the same goal and destiny. To live life the best way possible (within out capacity) until the arrival of our death. It's both a beautiful and tragical thing.

5 stars compared to many other authors- 3 stars when compared to her other books. I loved that this spanned a lifetime and allowed for some positive role modeling for aging well. I personally loved her book Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia - both 5 stars. This is somewhere after a House of Spirits but behind The Japanese Lover (for my preferences).

Isabel Allende volvió a su estilo narrativo de sus primeras novelas: ligeras, personajes tenaces y llenas de momentos emotivos.

Me encantó, y esta en mi lista de libros favoritos de este año.

This was a slow read for me and found it really hard to keep up with the political talk and the war especially as we didn’t know what country she was in. Some of the characters were very lovable others not so much. There’s both a lot going on in this book and nothing at all at the same time.

Allende writes family histories so well. I’m captivated by yet another one of her tales of a century of strife all the while Violeta proves to be a heroine who knows how to hold her own and live the life she wants.
