The ending was a bit rushed, but I loved the unconventional hero.

This is a very quick read--I read it on a Saturday morning before even getting out of bed, (What can I say? It's summer!) and it made for a very nice start to my day.

Both Winifred and Alistair are, in their own ways, different from the norm. Winifred was left at the altar by a man who then proceeded to trash her reputation in society. After a late night rescue during a snow storm, she decided to earn her reputation at least for a night (or until the storm ended, whichever--she was willing to make that sacrifice). Little did she realize that her impulsive act would have lasting consequences... (Yep! Secret baby troupe!)

Alistair reminded me a bit of the hero of [b:The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie|5981872|The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (Highland Pleasures, #1)|Jennifer Ashley|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1322336718s/5981872.jpg|6155268] by Jennifer Ashley. From his description, I'm pretty sure he has High Functioning Autism, which doesn't really bother him at all but has definitely colored how he is viewed and treated by others. As such, he is dead set against the possibility of passing it on to a child. Ever.

Oh, Alistair...the best of intentions, and birth control...sometimes they're just not enough...

Winifred is a fantastic character--very sweet and loving, and totally accepting of the oddities of both her son and his father. All she has to do is convince Alistair that they're meant to be a family, and her life will be complete...

A thoroughly enjoyable little book. Sure, it could have been longer, but if you're looking for a quick, sweet historical romance read, this just might fit the bill. It's the second in a series, but works fine as a stand alone.

I love that Robyn DeHart can put so much into a novella. A mystery and a second chance at love, this was a nice treat!
