Normally love La Plante but this was awful. Unbelievable characters, impossible timeline and behaviour that would not be tolerated in any job even by a maverick.

It was page turning and plotted cleverly but the anomalies and just not possible things took me just too far from even suspending reality
eg"taking time out" for a detective mid high profile case and an F1 doctor
Delinquency made good by ex-con
Setting off on a personal quest (which was non urgent) and disregarding casework on a fast moving investigation
Doctor and detective going from London at end of shift to houseclear in Devon when house offer only accepted that day
etc etc - What world is this?

I enjoyed reading this book but throughout the story I would get bored at times and would out it down. At the same time there was some scenes that made me not want to stop reading it! I think the author, Lynda La Plante, did an amazing job at describing the the forensic process. Me being a a student who studies forensics, I appreciated that she made sure her scenes were factual.
One thing I wish was developed more was the characters, I wanted to care about them more than I did, I wanted them to solve the crime more than I wanted jack to resolve his personal issues. Overall I enjoyed the plot and would recommend to someone looking for excitement and true crime.

Loved that there was finally a ending to the widows books with some unexpected twists thrown in. Looking forward to/hoping that there will be further Jack Warr books to come

This was incredible. One of the best mystery books I've read this year. It's the first in a series so best believe I'll be eagerly waiting for the next installment!

I'm sure I've read La Plante before, or at least I have seen TV adaptations of her work and thoroughly enjoyed them. This was a really quick read for me, I liked the characters and felt like they were well established, so I will look forward to the next book in the series. The descriptions of scenes could have been explained better bias I had to reread things several times to follow.

This is the first book I've read by Lynda La Plante and I'm more than a little excited to have gotten in on the first book in a new series! DC Jack Warr has done a decent job as an officer of the law. He isn't the most driven individual on the force, but he can get the job done. His girlfriend, Maggie, and his new boss, DCI Simon Ridley, would like to see a little more passion from Jack when it comes to career aspirations. When Jack receives devastating news right as an intriguing case has landed in his lap, it's all the motivation he needs to become truly passionate about pursuing the truth. But is his focus really on getting the job done? Or finding answers for himself? Where is the line between diligent investigating and obsession?

Tieing together crimes committed decades apart, La Plante creates characters that are simultaneously frustrating and likable. The plot was well-crafted and just complex enough to keep you guessing. I look forward to the rest of the series!
