This did not age well, if it ever was any good to start with. Passive voice running rampant, passive characters running, er, rampant. The whole thing is poorly characterized, poorly paced, poorly plotted, and strangely . . . almost entirely historically based. A bitter, angry take on said historical gender politics and warfare. Most stories revolve around fighting the fight to save a man, quite often from his own stupidity (Really, there's nothing else worth fighting for? REALLY?). Worse, the woman's power is never truly her own, only lent from a Higher Being. Seriously, 90s feminism, what is your deal? What– How– Just how do you screw up war + magic + badass women?

Save yourself the trouble, read Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment instead.
