Blaaaargle. This book... I don't know. I finished it out of just trying to see how badly I'd already guessed all the bits and pieces, and... yeah. Lots of character lecturing about what's going on around them and how awesome it is. Lots of one character telling another character to stop lecturing at her about how awesome everything is around them. I mean... really? I feel like when that happens in your novel, it's not a good sign.
Anyway, I think to be clear here, this had an interesting premise, could've gone somewhere, did not do so. Save yourself throwing a book across the room and scaring the crap out of your cats (or at least that's what happened at my place) and skip it.

Fun, but I was ready to throw my phone through a window if I heard the phrase 'in the the nightside' or 'John Taylor' or 'my private eye' one more damn time.

Such fun! Great world building. Dark and grimy scenes. Tone is noir. The series keeps getting better too.

I found several books from this series at a used book store. I just reread it before starting on number 2. It has the makings of a good series. The Nightside itself is really the star of the book. John Taylor as a character is good fun. I'd compare him to Jim Butcher's Dresden, only a little less "white knightish".

I love the world of the Nightside, Green is over descriptive in the best of ways in his world building. His style is Harry Dresden, meets Niel Gaiman, PG Clive Barker, and adult Rick Riordan. Peak of Urban fantasy.
I love John, Suzy, Alex, the bar, everything honestly.

It’s not often that I find a book to be overly descriptive but this book is one. While I appreciate vivid descriptions of locales and personalities, I also need the story to move forward at a decent pace to keep interested. This story lost my interest about midway through and it was a bit of a struggle to finish the listen.

I had fun with this. Good writing, good characters, fun dialog, action and a surprise. I will read more of this series. read this if you like Jim Butcher. I read Simon Green first in the compilation "Down These Strange Streets". I was concerned that the treatment would be stale as this was written in 2003 but it was good. Still holds up.
