Disturbing. I swear this book messed me up. I read as a younger teen. I would not recommend to anyone and personally will never read it again.

I can't decide if I should give this 1 star for being complete trash, or 5 stars for being complete trash. The writing was so so bad. The story line was seriously disturbing. I still feel icky... But I will probably be using the phrase "devils issue" for a good year after this, and that alone made it worth re-reading. Yes, I said re-reading. I've now willing picked up and read every page of this national treasure twice. And I will probably re-read all of the sequels as well. Because sometimes horrible = awesome.

This shit was fuckkked. Between uncle fucking, brother fucking and the mom killing off her kids with arsenic I was disgusted the whole time.
That being said, I loved it. V.C Andrews has a way of describing even the most wild shit, super well.

It's hard to convey how I felt about this book... It was bizarre. I have to admit, something about it kept me reading until I figured out how it ended, but I definitely don't think this book deserves all the hype it's gotten since it's been published. THIS was the forbidden book so many girls came of age to and passed around at slumber parties in the 80s and 90s? This? Really? 2.5 stars, rounded down.

What a throwback. How I loved this book (and other V.C. Andrews books) when I first read it as a tween. In many ways, it was quite formative too. So it was really fun to revisit it. I really liked the audiobook read by Mena Suvari.
Overall, it's... melodramatic. Just drama and trauma on top of drama and trauma and I mean, that's what you read Flowers in the Attic for (and Andrews in general), and while it's not quite my thing nowadays, I had a blast listening to it (though I had to take a break in the middle for a bit). It is, however, kinda too long. I read somewhere (wikipedia?) that Andrews said she didn't like books that described things for nothing and that her books were popular because she went straight to the point and I have to say, I disagree. I kinda wanted to take out several thousand words out of the middle and tell her she didn't have to do on so long about certain things, or repeat them. She could get carried away with those purple adjectives and descriptions like the best of them haha. But sometimes the over the top story with its evil mothers and child abuse, infanticide, incest, and drama could totally be delicious.
A classic tale that will always have a special place in my heart.
