Such a good book! I felt like it was a little bit slow in the beginning, and the resolution at the end was wrapped up a little too quickly in my opinion. But this book is such a good depiction of systemic racism and how everyone around you really is involved. I loved the friendships developed among the black characters. The gaslighting and microaggressions were so aggravating to read, but only because it's so real. I highly recommend reading for everyone. And the authors note was really touching.

A solid mystery! Towards the end, my mouth was open at the shock, and the plot twist was very well spun!! I think my biggest issue was the male main character. It seemed as though the book focused more on him than anything, and he was often too naive for my liking. Plus the narrator’s voice- he was so annoying at times that I wanted to fast forward his parts. I really wish there was more character development with the female main character, so that’s where a lot of my disappointment was because I think she was compelling in her own right. But there wasn’t much written about her, she was mainly driving the plot toward.

In 'Ace of Spades,' Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé paints an emotional masterpiece, pulling you into the raw reality of BiPOCs. It's not just a book; it's a journey that makes your heart ache with the characters' pain and frustration. You find yourself cheering for their strength amid adversities, and the beautifully crafted ending is like a warm hug after a storm, leaving you with a sense of hope and understanding. Àbíké-Íyímídé doesn't just tell a story; she invites you to feel it deeply.
What sets this book apart is its ability to not only shed light on the challenges but also to portray resilience and strength. The beautifully crafted ending serves as a ray of hope, offering a poignant counterbalance to the earlier tension and hardship. Overall, 'Ace of Spades' is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant work that leaves a lasting impact on its readers.

A simmering evil lives within these pages of frustrating cruelty conquered only just by a hope that community can triumph over the complexities of generational indoctrination.

I was going to give this a 3.5 but the last 50-100 pages was so thrilling and the ending was great.
