I wish I liked this book more. I wonder if I'd read it by itself and not within the Patternist series how much more I'd have liked it (though I believe my rating still wouldn't have increased past a 3). The link to the first two books in the series was wasn't strong and if you blinked you'd miss it. There's only one (barely) overlapping character, none of the psis abilities that interested me from the first two books, and the tone of this book is quite different.
Perhaps the connection will be stronger after I read Patternmaster, and I'll have a better reaction to this book and how it fits in the series.

I’ll be honest - at the start, I thought - wtf am I reading and what has happened to this series! I was so into the Pattern world. But I quickly got into the Clay Ark world & it was interesting to learn about the “early days”/ start of that within this series.
