It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO damn SLOOOOOOOOOOOW!!! But it does create tension. The writing felt like a slog tho - it's almost as if GRRM hates writing this book as much I hated reading all that damn exposition. Lol. I will say the fantasy is super light....don't get much fantastical plot points until about 70% way through. Also so unbelievably fatphobic and orientalist. Like WOW.

Was surprised at how much characters straight-up said the phrase "game of thrones". It was at least four times. This book made me appreciate the first season that much more considering how accurate and reverent it is to the source material. However, I felt like I was getting a lot of details that I didn't get in the show.
Dany dreaming of the red door of her home. Catelyn reminiscing on her childhood with Littlefinger and her sister Lysa. Cersei mentioning her and her brother being born together, him grabbing her foot, as if it excuses the incest somehow. Eddard dreaming of his sister again and again, seeing the blue roses, and the secret he keeps about Jon...
This whole book is masterfully written. I understand why people are mad that the series still isn't finished.

truly loved reading it and I do think it’s an incredible feat to have built this world and these characters… but I have to remove a star for some of the absolutely insane wild things written about dany…. At some points i just wanted to sit him down and go you’re actually not a 14 year old girl you’re a grown adult man and I should kill you…

When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.

I can’t rate this any higher in good faith because of its handling of sexual violence, the presentation of the Dothraki and the youth of its characters, but man, there’s just something about the original ASOIAF novels that House of the Dragon and the Game of Thrones adaptation can’t quite capture.

I really really enjoyed this. The only thing keeping me from giving it a full five is the incest.

Daenerys bringing about the new age of the dragons is amazing.
