I loved every bit of this! The world building was incredible and easy to follow. Sally Green follows the mind of a 17 year old boy and I truly felt like Nathan came alive. Nathan has been hurt deeply by life and we see how that impacts his friendships and even his lovelife (aka the killer Annalise). Nathan is so human and young. His constant anger and his strength to stay positive is so admirable. I love how his friends, even the annoying ones, work to make him laugh.

Gabriel deserves a whole world on his own (if there is, I will def check it out). I am so intrigued by his past life and choices. His intensity and devotion to Nathan made my heart swoon at every second. But this unrequited love was killing me. I pray they end up together in the end.

The life lessons were gut wrenching from the horrors of war and the impact of violence. Navigating grief, deaths & murder as a teenager is almost unbearable and Green gets that across the page. We are constantly asked to ask how to hold on to hope and have faith.

In this book, I constantly question if one can be truly good or truly bad? I questioned what the purpose of forgiveness is, who deserves it and how do we move on from the harm done in our childhood. I enjoyed so many great epiphanies about our lives and this book deeply changed me. I enjoyed the depth of the world. We really could ask more questions than if Nathan falls in love with Gabriel (and I say that in a good way!!!.

The acknowledgements are so comedic and honest. I love it.

I loved everything about this book! 100000000/10

Fucking Annalise ruining the whole book, and Nathan being a bloody idiot, and the only bright spot is Gabriel basically. I would give my life for him. Still, I liked it enough, although the quality has decreased drastically from the first book. Here's my hope that the third one will make up for this one. A girl can dream, I guess.

When I have the time I can read a book of this length in four hours. It took my 4.5 with the last 30 min consisting of me just sitting in shock when I closed the book. I was deeply saddened by the ending but I loved each and every character Sally Green brought into the second book. I love Nathan's ability to not say anything at all yet feel so much.

Much like the first book in this trilogy, this story feels like it's trying too hard. Things are just a bit over the top as if trying for effect. It's all just a bit heavy-handed. It also feels pretty predictable and also didactic. Of course war is bad. Killing is bad. Etc. The only reason it gets this many stars is because of the quality of the audio production. But teens who favor action and magic and who don't mind gore and violence may enjoy this book.
3.5 stars, rounded up.
