The tone is dark and defeated. The writing is crisper and cleaner than Steven Erikson, although I find it confusing when Cook refers to the same person by a name, a nickname, and a title, all in the same chapter. What's really removing motivation is learning today that much of Cook's earliest work in the _Black Company_ series has been out of print for ten years. Maybe I will find a copy of the first book at a secondhand store and start.

Easier to follow, and by the end back to what I like about these books.

I am so tired of Murgen and his dreams.

Mid.

Gibson continuously cripples his antagonists and I do not understand why. After so much tension and build up, the last, the biggest of the bad guys of the shadowland arc is just written into defeat. So lame.

At this point I am so over the dialogue, I wish I could filter it all out. None of it deserves to be read and it bloats the book up to 500 pages. There’s this weird presence of dialogue “tics” such as weird invented curses that persist for a hundred or so pages just to never be seen again.

The last quarter of the book was a flop (except for the really well done cliffhanger ending) and I was left confused more often than not. Too many pages spent describing uneventful dream surfing to explicitly progress the plot.

At this point I’m cursed to finish the series.
