Miss Gail Carriger has done it again!

Excellent ending, laugh-out-loud funny, and shenanigans only fit for Sophronia & Co.

Spoiler“Soap understood her. Soap would always understand.” Who knew a Middle-grade steampunk spy novel would nearly have me crying my eyes out 😭

I do so hope to see everyone again in the next one <3

Well, much like the last one, something crazy happens, there's weird dialogue at inopportune moments that seems to take way too long to occur within the realm of what is actually happening in the story, and Sophronia has to pull it all together so that her friends with all their funny quirks, who are actually "intelligencers," don't actually get themselves shot or killed by real people with guns. I KNOW. CRAZY RITE?

Something is off with how these books are written and I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it is steampunk as a genre? Maybe it is just this style of books that is not my thing, but I just can't handle the poor execution of action scenes and dialogue. Something exciting is finally happening in the plot, and then, they talk about manners or girls or etiquette or boys or their ill manners for so long that the action part of the plot does not even seem plausible that it is happening anymore at all. It is just me that finds that part of the plot just annoying after a while and ringing false? Oh, these boys and girls are together, hanging out and having fun, but I just remembered what time period this is supposed to take place, so we better ramble about how that is below this class of people for a little bit to cover up these massive plot holes? Don't get me wrong, love books about Victorian England. Love them. This is a book that seems to be trying to be like that, but definitely isn't, but then it isn't much fun to read either, because it doesn't deal with that part of the plot well at all. Is that what steampunk is? Terrible Victorian era plots, riddled with holes, with poor attention actually paid to what is happening. Geez, I hope not.

ALSO ALSO ALSO, one of my favorite characters from the last two books, Vieve, is entirely missing from this story line. I am so disappointed. She created all these cool inventions, liked style, but her character wasn't over the top and didn't frustrate me to no end with actual stupid rules about things that are terrible and unhelpful. Why lose the best character?

These books had the potential to be so cool. What an awesome idea. What interesting story potential. What happened?!?!?!

So much fun! But I did kind of get a bit tetchy about the love triangle thing >_>
Spoilerthough I'm glad she came to the realisation of whom she wanted by the end of the book

I did miss Vieve though, hope she's in the next one.

Out of this series this has been my favorite book. The writing quality has improved and I am getting to know and appreciate the details of character and the steampunk era it is set in.
