The intro to this book said it was possibly the most influential novel of the 20th century. I kind of find that hard to believe based on how incredibly boring it is.

The book was slow-paced and so insanely in the mind of the main character that sometimes i found it difficult to really understand where things where going, but after

the initial encounter with the Arabs

I found it interesting enough to continue. Overall it felt less like an engaging plot with interesting characters and more like the ramblings of a man so absorbed in his situation that he can’t bother to satisfy even the closest people to his heart. He just really didn’t gaf i guess😭

the first half of this book is a slog… but the second half is spectacular! in “part one” all i could wonder about was how this book has such high praise, but once “part two” begins, camus’ wit and philosophical ponderings really shine. however, to me, that didn’t justify or lift up the previous section for me to give it a higher rating. the paratext (i.e., introduction and translator note) does a lot of the work to explain why they first half is like that, but it still didn’t resonate with me like the second half did.

overall, this was a relatively interesting book. you could even say it was, a bit, kafkaesque :)

I really hated everything about this book. If this is being considered existential then I have lost hope. This is just all around bad. The summary is this simple: a psychopath who has no ability to feel emotions of any kind including love or remorse kills someone. There is nothing existential about it. I’m really starting to hate “classics!”
