STUNNING, so incredibly well-constructed, an overall amazing book. A very pirate story, with all the good and bad trappings that come with pirates - violence and treasure and magic. Each person is crafted with a careful hand, demonstrating Maggie Tokuda-Hall's excellence at character development.

I personally found the writing style to lack a bit of description and depth because it was so fast-paced, and some parts of the plot threw me for a loop. Love mermaids tho and witches and pirates :)

somewhere between 2.5-3 stars for me. This book had a lot to say about imperialism and colonialism. However, I did not love/connect with the characters. I thought there were some good moments which kind of pushed me to finish the book.

This book just wasnt for me which is a bummer because I was really excited

I'm a sucker for LGBTQ representation in books and this one was no exception. On the surface, the relationship between Flora and Evelyn seemed perfect. However, looking at it from a critical lens, I would've loved for it to have been developed more and for it to have been less of a sort of "insta-love" kind of thing. The book seems to gloss over their relationship in favor of other elements of the story. Another issue I had with this story was the pacing. It really dragged a lot in the second part. I desperately wanted that part of the story to be over, but it seemed to just keep going. On a positive note, it was beautifully written and when the action finally started up, it was hard for me to put the book down.

Pirate fantasy adventure with kick ass females is very much my genre! Primarily characters of color pushing against traditions and defying gender norms. The first book I’ve read with non binary characters. I think I liked the idea of the story more than the story itself. Halfway through it started feeling long and drawn out and the ending wasn’t my favorite.

Loved this. It grabbed me from the get go and I didn't want to put it down.
I don't think I've ever read anything like it and I can not wait to read the sequel
