3½ ster

Exciting police procedural set in East Anglia at a private boarding school. Great leading characters, multiple enthralling storylines and dark humour. Only downside was the middlepart, because it was a little long-winded. Sad that Ms Riley has passed away - such a great talent and this could‘ve been the start of a promising new thriller series.

Thank you NetGalley / Pan Macmillan for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review.

“Christ! This case is moving slowly.”
“That’s the sticks for you ma’am.”

Er no …it’s the unnecessary sub-plots, such as the superflous hospital scenario.

I finished this book, despite its faults, which were many.

Nearly all the characters were terribly posh , except for Jaz’s husband, who was almost comically Irish, so he was.

I found it quite sexist. Jazz was supposedly a ‘strong female character’ but she turned into a wobbly jelly when faced with her ex-husband ( …as her heart sped up, remembering the intimate knowledge he had of her..”) and towards the end she started whimpering about big , strong men and how she’d like a ‘girl’ on the team.

I found the domestic violence storyline pretty distateful too. Angelina was a bitch.David only hit her once. So that’s okay then.

As for the old homosexuality tropes… I had my fingers crossed that she wouldn’t go there. But she did.

I hardly know how to rate this book. I hated it, yet I did want to keep following the plot to its conclusion. It was pretty well plotted.

At the start of this (posthumous)book was an introduction by the author’s son. He said that this was one of this mother’s earlier, previously unpublished works and that it had not been revised or updated prior to publication. I think this was a mistake. I suspect there are reasons it wasn’t published at the time, and a few of them may be in my comments above.
