Ali Cobby Eckermann is a poet of the Yankunytjatjara and Kokatha people, and a survivor of the Stolen Generation. I highly recommend this interview in which Eckermann shares her background and experience with poetry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJs8sAyTq1I&t=29s
Ruby Moonlight is a narrative told over a series of poems, and is a story that packs so much emotion and nuance into very few words. The story is set in the late nineteenth century and follows a young Indigenous women that has survived the massacre of her whole family. She meets a young Irishman who is down on his luck and alone, and their shared loneliness connects them almost instantly (“in their remoteness / they are heaven / in their remoteness / they are earth / remoteness is essential / to their merger”). What follows is their momentary respite in each other’s company, a union still forbidden by law at the time. This all occurs amidst the surrounding setting of frontier violence that has not paused or ceased in its brutality while the two shared these moments.
This is a collection rich in nature writing and evocative descriptions of land, both its beauty and its role as a witness to the devastation of people and culture through colonialism.
