Every November the Scorpio Races takes place. The riders attempt to tame their water horses, who can be deadly. Sean Kendrick, a champion, is returning once again to race his treasured water horse, hoping to win enough money to buy said horse. Puck enters the race in order to keep her brother on the Island. Puck has never ridden a race before, and ends up with the help of Sean; which leads to love and trust developing between them.

I love Maggie Stiefvater. She has such a beautiful writing style that captures your attention from the beginning. I found The Scorpio Races was one of my favourite of hers, (also loving The Raven Boys,) and she always has such a unique story. I loved the Capaill Uisce, and how dangerous they were – particularly to the riders. There is a good pace to the story and you’re captivated from the beginning.

Maggie creates such compelling characters, in all her books, that you just can’t help but fall for. Sean is troubled, fierce, protective, and seemingly cold, but through spending time with Puck, he becomes caring and thoughtful – and selfless, incredibly so at the race. Puck is courageous, loveable and strong-willed and is determined to race, even if it means putting herself in danger, in order to keep her family together and win enough money to support them. Both Sean and Puck have had a difficult life, and they find comfort in each other. Their love for each other is well developed and subtle to an extent. Their is no mad make-out scenes, but a love that goes beyond that. A love of sacrifice. I am glad that it was not forceful, that it had time to develop and it was sub-plot. The plot was about them, seperately; working through their struggles.

If you’re looking for an action packed fantasy, this is definitely a book for you. If you love Maggie Stiefvater, read this.

Fantastic.

Wow, this was good! The most tightly plotted MS book I've read. Loved Puck and Sean, the murderous water horses, and how atmospheric the island was.

there’s nothing wrong with the book. the story and plot are generally interesting, i just think i’m too old to enjoy it the way it’s meant to be enjoyed.
Very much on the Y side of Y/A. (my own fault, really)
