This is another childhood re-read. I was obsessed with this author's books in middle school. This particular one is one of the saddest books he wrote. I love the group dynamic between the characters, and particularly like Anya. The stories they tell each other in the club are beautiful, and terrible. The overarching theme of death is felt in every word. Considering this is a hospice facility for teens, this is not a surprise. (Its not a spoiler, it tells you on the back of the book!) The quiet love between Ilona and Kevin is sweet, and even now as an adult, I can appreciate the instinct to love as much and deeply as possible because we never know what tomorrow brings. The moments of hope that the main narrator Ilona has, coupled with the stark reality of her situation keeps you reading til the last page. I cried a few times reading this. As a young reader, I dont think it made me cry, but at 12, you feel like 18 is so far away. Now at 37, I know how young these characters are, and its so, so sad. I did not like how violent one characters stories are, but its got a narrative reason, so it gets a pass from me.

I recommend this book if you enjoy tense, tightly knit narratives.

This book was not at all what I expected to be. It is not a spooky or mysterious story, as the synopsis paints it out to be. Instead, it is a reflection on life and death, told through beautiful, thought provoking tales. Even though it wasn’t the fun ghost story I was expecting, I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and will probably be thinking about it for a while.

picked up the book thinking it was a ghost/supernatural story. Not at all but it is beautiful, heartbreaking.
A beautiful yet sad story about hope, love and friendship.
