Poco antes de morir (Como consecuencia de su dependencia del alcohol) Roth escribió esta narración sobre un alcohólico que tiene una misión que cumplir pero al que las circunstancias (y su dependencia) se lo impiden.

Supongo que esta obra se puede considerar el testamento literario de Roth (Posiblemente ya fuera consciente de que no le quedaba mucho tiempo) En cualquier caso es una historia absorbente y con todo el talento que era capaz de dar de si el autor. Mi favorita entre toda su obra.

Forse questa novella diventa parabola nel momento in cui vediamo nella figura del benefattore Dio, che concede i suoi doni al povero Andreas apparentemente senz motivo, senza nulla chiedere in cambio se non di restituire ciò che ha dato alla piccola Santa Teresa. Nel suo "viaggio" Andreas cercherà più volte di tenere fede alla sua promessa, ma ricadrà sempre nel peccato (l'alcool, i piaceri...) per motivi futili. Andreas ha l'intenzione di fare il Bene, ma il Male triva sempre nuovi modi per tentarlo e fargli cambiare strada in modo subdolo. È una bella parabola se letta in questo modo, ma personalmente leggendo la trama mi sarei aspettata qualcosina di più. Per ora due stelle e mezzo, ma la mia opinione potrebbe cambiare con una rilettura.
