As much as I love Nora Roberts and her books, I’m afraid I was rather disappointed this time. The main characters are unbearable - Sloan is an aggressive, toxic jerk, and Amanda plays hard to get, which annoyed me af throughout the whole book. Their relationship is pretty senseless as it develops too rapidly, depriving us of a pleasant tension building. I’m even getting the impression that male possessiveness is somehow sexualized in this book, and Sloan is supposed to be an example of the ideal man - strong, a bit crude (yet still romantic), possessive, passionate (I mean aggressive), and utterly handsome. Well, in my view, this picture of an ideal man is outdated and pretty detrimental. The only good thing is the Calhouns family, their beautiful house, and mysterious stories about some treasured family heirlooms.

Books from 1991 are a bit of a trip. Sloan is A LOT. Being an Oklahoman, the high handed was was familiar. I still love Nora but this books was a bit cringey In 2022.

Amanda Calhoun is all business and when architect Sloan O'Riley arrives at The Towers she is determined to keep things purely professional, especially when it seems like Sloan has a grudge against her sister, Suzanna. But as the mystery of The Towers and Bianca Calhoun deepens so does the danger. Amanda and Sloan are falling in love against their will while trying to discover the truth of the Calhoun family's past and save the family home. A light mystery perfect for readers who like love stories with light suspense. To hear a full discussion of A Man for Amanda listen to Season 3, Ep. #8 "Nora Roberts' The Calhoun Women: Catherine, Amanda, and Lilah" of Romancing the Shelf, a Nora Roberts podcast: https://romancingtheshelf.libsyn.com/

Amanda, the sensible one of 5 sisters, falls head over heels for three new guy. Then things get complicated by a search for jewels and a thief and a ghost. This one was a bit dated. Definitely doesn’t ring true with modern sensibilities of how to treat women. Still we have a happily ever after.

Sloan O'Riley is glad when his friend Trent calls and asks him to be the architect for the Towers project, turning the Calhoun family mansion half into a hotel and updating the other half for the family to live in. He's happy to help his friend and, if he can get to know the Calhouns a little bit, so much the better. But he's not expecting to literally run into Amanda Calhoun nor to feel an immediate attraction for her. Nor is he expecting the complicating factor of her attraction to him.And if that's not enough, someone is lurking around, trying to get their hands on the still-lost family treasure.
Originally published as a Harlequin series book in the 90s, there's not a lot of time to develop character but Roberts does a nice job within the pages she had.

Amanda Kelly Calhoun is organized and practical in her own right. Searching for the emeralds of her family, she is preoccupied with her life. Wanting to achieve her goals she works hard. Falling into Sloan O'Reily was not in her plans. Flustered, angry and off balance, she learns what the taste of love can bring. Her stubbornness to accept her feelings, it's a whirlwind of a dance between the two, before they finally give in to those feelings. Manipulated by a hotel guest, he breaks into The Towers to find the emeralds. After a night of terror, Sloan demands that Amanda stops fighting her aversions and marry him. For the first time, Amanda is not practical, she's in love. Roberts takes us on a journey with her easy to relate tone, and emotional adventure.
