I gave this series every chance. I really did. This is evident by the fact that I continued reading even though the first book was mediocre. The Colours of Madeleine series does have some things going for it. The idea of there being two (or more) alternate worlds which are connected by cracks in the universe is quite interesting. The color storms and way to catch spells also piqued my interest. However, the negatives are just too numerous to overcome.
This world legitimately does not make sense. And I could accept that. Fantasy worlds by definition are imagined and in that sense I do not care if they are not logical. This world tries to be logical while being illogical and it irks me to no end. The author references famous scientists (such as Isaac Newton) and expects their ideas to translate to her world. Which they don’t.
Also there are too many different stories going on. We follow too many people and most of them are irrelevant. The story where the Princess’s family is missing and she pressures everyone into helping her? Boring. The fact that they all put their lives on hold to help her and she’s a complete brat? Infuriating. The author tries to make the reader care about the characters and I just don’t.
Let’s just say I should’ve stopped while I was ahead. I’m going to try to find a summary of the third book online because I have some theories about one of the storylines and I want to see if I’m right. I probably am and honestly that makes me even more disappointed in the author of this story.

I really am enjoying these books. My only complaint is that I wish they'd come out faster! These books are in the same vein as The Magicians series, but for a bit younger reader. The story is pretty delightful and complex, and I'm excited to see what happens next.

Picked this ARC up at PLA 2014 and I have no idea why because the cover screams "girl book" "romance" - ack! Well, this series is none of the above really. It is science, portals (is this a genre, because I like portal books) fantasy and a wee bit of romance. It takes place in two worlds, but we can all relate to Cambridge, UK, not so much the Kingdom of Cello. I am looking forward to book 3 and recommend this to anyone who likes the Mithergate series & Harry Potter. I know what a mix right?
A favorite quote. "The misaligned center of you. The misaligned center of me." <--romantic science

This series is fluffy on the outside and so, so rich in the inside. The characters, the world, the prose, and the way the plot slots together like perfectly formed puzzle pieces are all absolutely beautiful.

Re-listening to this book was such a delight. I just love the characters it introduces, and the way the plot develops is so engaging. I already can't wait to revisit this book again.

The second book in Moriarty's Colors of Madeleine series does a great job building on the first two, with more dramatic reveals, budding romances, adventure, danger, friendships, and sheer super awesome world-building. I mean, just all around excellent storytelling.

THE PERFECTION OF THIS BOOK IS OVERWHELIMG. I ALREADY LOVED JACLYN MORIARTY, BUT THIS IS... THIS IS ALMOST INSULTING, IT'S SO PERFECT. I WANT THE NEXT BOOK TO BE 1000 PAGES LONG, BECAUSE EACH SENTENCE, EACH WORD, GIVES ME SUCH JOY, I WANT IT TO BE A LONG ASS JOY.
