I loved this book! Autumn’s Tithe is a magical, exciting read. Larken, the MC, has such amazing character development throughout the book. I appreciate how each side character is very three dimensional as well. All the characters in AT are unique and truly stand out, which is something really important to me as a reader. Larken is curvy as well, which is something you don’t often see in YA fantasy novels. And, (possibly mild spoiler) throughout the book we see Larken go from struggling with self doubt and with her body image to her fully embracing herself and the body she’s in. As a plus size person, this really resonated with me. While AT is set in a magical faery world, Larken remains beautifully human. The worldbuilding is done well, and there are many witty/funny moments that I loved. All in all, Autumn’s Tithe is a spectacular debut novel with an imaginative world and unique characters that you will absolutely fall in love with.

EDIT: Previously I had this at a 4, had to mark it down after reading some other reviews because something occurred to me lol
Spoiler a major character died and I felt nothing. Like He was supposed to be close to Larken but I just didn't care when he was basically murdered so.... yeah points down

This was a great book! I really liked the concept and how the whole story played out.
There was a twist (or two) I saw coming, because of things that were set up throughout the book, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment.

The only thing I really disliked was that the Fae Lord's name was "Finder" pronounced Find (like to find something) -er. That was kind of lame lol

I had gotten the bookish box edition so the cover is beautiful, but I preordered Autumn's Traitor and as of October 3rd, it STILL has not been shipped despite being originally promised in August, so hopefully it shows up before NEXT summer *eye roll emoji*

But all that to say I'm excited to read the next one!!!! And I hope the third comes out soon!!! :)

Got the beautiful Bookish Box edition and I’m so thrilled with it! However, this is about the actual story/plot. The main character is supposed to be ‘not chosen,’ which goes against the Chosen One trope. I found that interesting in theory, but lacking in practice. She has no describable skills (except cartography, but even then it hardly gets her through the labyrinth and has no other uses besides that). She’s not quick witted, funny, or really has much of a personality except that she’s …nice?…a decent human being?….an average person of average looks? I wasn’t invested in her at all. Nor was I really in any of the other characters (then the best one was killed off).

Her sense of self importance—-maddening. She was simultaneously so hard on herself (for her appearance), but also viewed herself so important to where she was MAD when Finder was healed first from the poison. She’s known the males for under a week at this point! They’re literally bound to Finder in protecting him and have been friends for DECADES. Of course, everyone’s obsessed with her and tells her how special she is because she has basic human compassion. The wolf shifter invited her back ‘anytime’ because her pack loves human women? Like that’s it? They’re going to be friends just because she’s a girl?…okay?

Overall plot was interesting, albeit predictable, but I had fun going along for the ride. The twist at the end—definitely was exciting and I’m interested to see how that will play out in the next book (if it’s free on KU).

It was a decent book, just so rushed and predictable. In its attempts to stray from the norm/typical fantasy tropes—it lost all of that sparkle that they tend to have.

Overall, I'm a little disappointed by this book. My expectations were maybe a bit too high, but it just wasn't what I was expecting. I thought I was going to get something along the lines of An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson, but it more so felt like a flat version of that.

Here's my main critiques:
  1. The info dumping is insane. It felt like 70% of the book was just dialogue of info dumping while they were travelling. I don't mind info dumping here and there, but this book felt entirely just that.
  2. A lot of this book just felt like a story I've read before.
  3. I listened to the audiobook for half of it. I hated that the entire thing wasn't narrated in an Irish accent. Like if legit everyone sounds the same, just do the entire book in that accent.
  4. Normally I prefer dialogue over action scenes, and normally I love dialogue heavy books. But because of the info-dumping, I genuinely thought 99% of the dialogue just dragged on.
  5. I just wish more happened in general.

That being said, despite all the above, I did enjoy the book. I won't be buying the remainder of the series, but I will borrow it from my library and continue it! The ending was insane, and I will be starting the sequel as soon as possible (ngl, I'm disappointed I didn't see it coming!). So, this definitely wasn't a bad book by any means, it just didn't meet my expectations.

Great side characters, good world building, but wasn't sure if I couldn't connect to the 17yo FMC due to age/maturity or just her personality
