Oof, I'm torn. This was by far the most action-packed of the trilogy and I enjoyed a lot of the world building but that ending just left me unsatisfied. 3.5 stars rounded to 4 out of respect for how much I enjoyed the rest of the series.

Let's back up. We know that a company called WICKED has basically kidnapped, brainwashed, and illegally coerced a bunch of teenagers to run through a set of trials in order for this company to study their brains and find a cure for a debilitating brain disease. Okay. Then we find out that WICKED has installed chips inside everyone's brain and is controlling what people do. Okay. Then we find out that the main character (Thomas)'s best friend (Teresa) has betrayed him time and time again. Okay. Then we find out she's been mind-controlled the whole time.

Book three. Some people have their minds "uncontrolled" through a surgery. Teresa is missing. Thomas finds new friends and they decide to overtake WICKED and restore "normalcy" to a world full of brain damaged, dying, dangerous people.

Here's the problem. We know they most of the people in these books are being controlled by WICKED and that up until this point, most of the twists and turns are a result of WICKED tricking everyone with mind controlling and manipulation. So we have NO CLUE who is good and who is bad. Or who can be trusted. Or even how Thomas feels about anyone.

In short, I read the entire third book completely skeptical of every character, every story arc, and every plot twist. Tons of people died and I didn't care because I didn't know whether they were good or bad.

Not the best ending.
