Both delightful and horrific. The author starts out making sure you know that coyotes are thriving in the 21st century. They are coexisting with humans in cities and other wildlife in wilderness areas. I already knew they were smart and flexible from growing up around them on a ranch in Idaho. However, I was not aware they had been one of the victims of animal genocide begun by the US government in the early years of the 20th century. Yes, I knew that the government trapper existed. He stopped by to have coffee with my dad. They were buddies. And yes, I knew that wolves had to be reintroduced in Yellowstone. I just did not know where the wolves went. I didn’t realize what the trapper actually did. This book told me more than I could stand to know on both counts. I had to skip a couple of chapters because they were too horrible. I am grateful for scientists and activists who were able to stop the killing before coyotes and wolves were driven to extinction.

DNF at 26%, after finishing Chapter 2. There's not really a clear throughline to this book, and it never managed to snag my interest. It's a scattered look at a lot of things tangentially related to coyotes, but in the sections I read, author Dan Flores never quite manages to articulate an overall thesis or get me invested in what he has to say.
