Nonfiction poetry! A great read aloud, a good model for poetry units, too.

There are some gorgeous poetry books on the natural world for kids these days. Sayre’s text is simpler and more approachable than Joyce Sidman’s books; more complex than Helen Frost’s. Jenkins’ illustrations are perfect as always.

It's surprise to know that the bear can eat everything from flower, pine cone, frozen meat to insect, trout, small and big animal. Look like human, right? But in each month, they have different food to find.

Great book for young readers who are looking for information about brown bears, specifically their eating habits. I loved how this book showed through the months a brown bear spends on the prowl, how it finds food, what type of food it eats and how it looks for its food. Text that flows, yet it does not shy away from using some important vocabulary ("forage", "unearth", "talus slopes"). So much information can be taken from the story! The author includes additional information at the end of the book that goes into more depth about the eating habits of the brown bear.

This is a book I selected for an outreach storytime today in my son's classroom. The teacher asked me to read stories about seasons and this one is excellent! The illustrations appear to be made from mixed media, including paper- very reminiscent of some Eric Carle books. The subject matter is a bear finding things to eat throughout the year. I like how it is very matter-of-fact and not sentimental. I think the kids will enjoy it; we'll see!

The narrative was a little stilted for me, but the illustrations are out of this world! Who knew that paper could look like that!
