Love it!!!
This book has so much in it that just makes you smile and laugh. Each character is fully developed and so life like that you just absolutely cannot wait for more!

I'm done. I'm just a goner for any of A.J. Sherwood's books and I adored this one. I loved the idea of an assassin feeling so horrible about the life a child is stuck in that he ends up adopting her. And Remi, she's just plain awesome. She's had such a horrible start to life, with a god awful stepfather and no way out. Why wouldn't she approach a guy she's just seen kill the worst of the worst in her neighborhood to help her? Of course Ari's reaction isn't exactly what she expected or really what he expected either.
I'm so glad that this story is the love affair between and assassin and a mercenary. I was terrified that this story was going to have Ari falling for some small town teacher or something. Someone who would be oh so perfect for Remi. But, man that just wouldn't have worked. They would never have understood Ari's background and have had the patience that Carter did. Carter may not have known what he was getting into exactly when he tracked Ari down, but he's completely thrown for a loop with what he found. But, he's an honorable guy and would never betray a confidence, and as he gets to know Remi and Ari the last thing he wants to do is give away their secrets. He wants in, he wants to be a part of their little circle and Remi's more than on board with that plan.
Add in the fact that Ari has the awesomest friends and they're all off on a crazy heist job to steal back a famous Monet, well I'm done. This was a thoroughly enjoyable romp from beginning to end. I can't wait to be back with all of these guys in the next book.

I was not a fan of Remi being older than what she was. She brought me out of the story so much. I'll still continue on because I'm interested in the rest of the group. Ari not so much though.

A new series by AJ Sherwood with an Assassin with a heart of gold and his family of criminals. Saying that all the scenes are stolen by a 8 year old girl who made me smile and tugged at the heartstrings.

Found family is my weakness.
I love this about A J Sherwood. I love that her stories are consistently good, all warm and fuzzy, and very wholesome even when the premise could be bleak. She just refuses to be bleak and dark. And I LOVE how unapologetic she is about it.
This book is no different. Looking a premise about the life of an assassin, you'd think it'd be all dark and gloom. But it's A J Sherwood, right???? So everything bleak doesn't have place in here. Instead, she presents you a very wholesome dish: found family between experienced criminals, a smart orphaned daughter adopted by an assassin, said daughter is actually involved in missions because she's great at it, said daughter is adored and spoiled rotten (!!!!) by the criminals, a gentleman pseudo-criminal love interest who understands boundaries and has the patience of a saint.
Or in short: *dreamy sigh*
I LOVE IT OKAY? I mean, people who know me would know that I live for angst and I always read tragic depressing stuff but!!! I need books like ones A J Sherwood wrote. I NEED it to survive the bleak ones out there, okay? Let me just say she's one of my most anticipated authors. It also helps that I always love her characters.

I'm SO reminded of a quote from Leverage after reading this - "sometimes bad guys make the best good guys."
Ari is not a good guy - he's an assassin. He's also friends with a thief, a hacker, and befriends a mercenary. (See why I get the Leverage vibes, you guys?!) While on a job, Ari rescues a young girl and decides to keep her rather than have her get lost in the foster care system. She is renamed Remi and officially/unoffically (because, y'know, illegal!) becomes his daughter.
Carter is ex-military and now works as a mercenary and likes being a team leader. Problem is - he hasn't really had the best of teams. Now he has a new job to steal back a priceless painting, and he knows this is going to be a 2-person job and goes in search of Ari. After Ari calls in his friends Ivan and Kyou, the four (five, if you count Remi!) must work together to get the job completed.
This is a slow-burn in the romance department, and I would say Ari might identify as demi-sexual or grey-ace, based on some of his thoughts about previous experiences with men. It's also definitely a character-driven story. I LOVED the quirks and habits of all four of these men together. The jokes about Ivan licking things, Kyou having this mysterious man that he's stalking/protecting/watching (MUST know more about that!), and how after reading this I have a feeling Remi is going to be the most mature one of the bunch LOL.
I will say that Remi hovers that fine line of being a cute kid character and also a bit unbelievable - TOO precocious and TOO smart for her age. I think she'd have to be a child prodigy to pick up things as quickly as she does and to be as mature as she is. Yes, she's had an unimaginable childhood and has some serious trauma, but I almost wish she had been like 10 or 11 to help make things just a bit more plausible?
Of course, at the end of the story, these four now have to figure out what to do next. Carter wants them all to work together, and I can't wait to see how the next job with them all goes. I know the next story is Ivan's, but I do hope we'll get more of Carter and Ari as they were still in the early stages of their relationship, having to go slow and at Ari's pace.
As with movies and shows revolving around heists and illegal crimes (The Italian Job, Oceans 11, Leverage, etc) you definitely have to suspend some belief to make some scenarios work. I think you will enjoy this story if you can just enjoy the quirky characters and the journey!

Brilliant!
Loved the story! It could have been heartbreaking, considering what Remi had been through, but Ms Sherwood made her a heroine to admire.
Ari has a heart of gold beneath his hard exterior. Carter is such a lovely character; rounding out the gang with Ivan and Kyou, this has been a very good story. Loved it!
Hope to see more of the budding relationship between Ari, Carter and Remi. And I'd love to see how Ivan and Kyou fare in the future.
