Thanks to NetGalley for an eARC!

I discovered about Melania Luisa Marte on Instagram and really loved what I was reading about this poetry book. I'm so glad I was able to read this poetry collection. It was deep, rich, and raw. This poetry collection moved me, and I've bookmarked quite a few poems in the book to re-read and share with others. I highly recommend this book.

I wasn’t sure how to answer the question prompts above as this is a poetry collection, but I will say I found the poems beautiful, lyrical, sharp, aching, savoring. I can’t wait to flip back to my favorites.

it reminds me to love myself and takes naps. As an descendant of the Caribbean I deserve it.

THIS is what poetry is supposed to be! I thought that Rupi Kaur was peak poetry when I read it in high school but this collection literally changed my life. Every word was so well-chosen, which made every sentence so important and special. While I am a white woman reading this, I feel like this was so educational and it taught me even more about Black culture and Afro-Latina culture. This is one of the most meaningful poetry collections I have ever had the privilege of reading and I truly think this will become a classic. Everyone needs to read this.

Thank you so much to the publisher for reaching out to me and thank you to NetGalley for gifting me a temporary ebook. All opinions are my own.

Plantains and Our Becoming is the first poetry book I have read where the author uses so many different styles of poetry, yet keeps everything cohesive and flowing. Melania Luisa weaved beautiful imagery with modern day references in a unique and brilliant way. I can't wait for more works from her.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers, PENGUIN GROUP Dutton and Tiny Reparations Books for the advanced review copy in exchange for an honest review.
