It didn’t feel like all that much happened, but I felt some appropriate feels at points that made it slightly better than the average book for me.

This book left me desiring more sci fi aspects since the realistic fiction aspects of it made it so so depressing. It was so beautifully written but It’s bleak and unforgiving. I feel worse off with my existentialism than when I started.

Truly so much going on in this novel. It's weird but not for the sake of it. The concept of an alien girl communicating the wonder of human life to her home planet through a fax machine doesn't overshadow the heart of the character herself and the emotional coming-of-age journey the book takes you on. Awe is such a brilliant actual character in the book, but again, not for the sake of conveying quirkiness. There is ACE REPRESENTATION, which is sooooo hard to find in literary novels, and even when you do, it's some side character that barely contributes to the plot.

No notes, except for the title not at all doing the book justice. Bertino has done something great here and managed to write a clever novel that doesn't jump up and down saying, "Hi, look at me! I'm trying to be clever!"

I don’t think I liked this book, but it’s very well written. I might just need to sit with it for a while, or maybe it just wasn’t for me.

I have few words to describe how much I enjoyed this book, needless to say I’ll probably read it again soon. I kept bracing for some big explosion, because when you see “alien” there tend to be some underlying assumptions. This was such a … calm? sci fi? I found myself slowing down while reading to enjoy the observations of human behavior, and to enjoy Adina as a character.
