Don't sit down to tea before starting this book! Actually this is my first experience with Ngaio Marsh and a very pleasant one indeed.

I enjoyed this classic mystery: the plot was smart, the characters interesting, and I appreciated the subtle humor of Inspector Alleyn. I'd read more in this series.

3.5 ish stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

I admit the first half was pretty boring as the characters sat around and did a verbal postmortem on the character of the murder victim. The last two chapters had some more action and it was certainly an explosive finale.

The second Alleyn book I've read and it's an interesting balance between cold case murder mystery, war time espionage thriller and stately home interview-the-suspects story. While many of the characters are English, the setting of a south island high country station/sheep farm makes for an evocative setting, capturing the NZ fauna and environment nicely. If anything, more could have been developed here to make it stand out. The actual plot and outcome felt a little plain in contrast but Alleyn is an entertaining character.

Beautiful writing. Interesting and unusual setting. Fairly standard “cozy” elements but imminently enjoyable.
