I enjoyed this book for the most part. It dragged a bit in the middle but the action picked up again and held my attention to the end. I would have wished for some stronger female characters but in the end, the book made me laugh and the last half of it is set in Bath, what more could a girl ask for?

I know many love this one, but I have never been able to finish it in the forty years I've been reading Heyers. The conversations are interminable, seeming to exist for the sake of using period slang (especially that made up by Pierce Egan) and not particularly witty to me. The plot meanders, never catching my interest; I just do not like her long-suffering heroine plots.

I wish this idea--the put-upon, mild young duke who runs away and assumes an ordinary identity and promptly finds himself in adventures--had occurred to her decades before, when she was at the top of her game.

I liked this, as I do all Heyer - though this was occasionally a bit slow-moving. Still loads of fun. I realized, afterwards, that it wasn't really the typical romance I was expecting. Yes, there was romance, but it wasn't the main focus of the story - instead this is a lovely hilarious story about someone coming into his own. That's a nice change of pace.

I didn't remember the plot very well from the last time I read it, so it was a fun read.

This book was so fun! Gilly was hilarious and I loved seeing his scrapes and the crowd of misfits he kept picking up. I thought the romance was sweet, and all the characters really grew on me. Georgette Heyer has a way of brining all the side characters to life, and this one had a ton of side characters to root for and enjoy! I had a fun time reading this and watching Gilly grow and change throughout the story.

Most of the Heyer romances that center on the hero have two types of annoying female characters - the beautiful, young, unbelievably naive but impetuous innocent who the hero saves, and the older, long-suffering, capable friend who helps him and he finally realizes he is in love with. This is such a one.
