“Our greatest fears are warped reflections of our greatest desires.”

Never in my wildest dreams I expected to love this book as much as I did. It’s one of the best books I’ve read in a while.

Fans of The Boys in Amazon Prime will totally love this.

“Why is that? That people find things sexy in fiction that would creep them the hell out in real life?”

When I tell you that I literally couldn’t stop highlighting everything. The friendships, the plot twists, the CHAOS, the reveal after reveal, the writing, the plot, the aesthetic of the world: everything was perfect.

Imagine Gotham City, but full of Nightmares, and kind of a post apocalyptic world.

“Why do people get so wrapped up in romance? Why does one person have to be your everything? They have to satisfy your sexual fantasies. They have to be your emotional support lodestone. They have to take on all your problems and all your desires and that’s just so much.” He looks at me, and his green eyes are wide and confused. “Why can’t we have more than one person supporting us? Why do people feel like you have to give up or grow apart from your friends when you get into a relationship?”

If you’re tired of the same bad ass main character this book is for you. Vanessa was everything I needed, she’s a coward, and smart, and funny. You’ll have an amazing time reading her because she’s as unhinged as this book.

“I just wish that the world weren’t so wrapped up in this type of toxic love,” he whispers. “This fantasy that you have to be tangled up together in some sort of horrible, parasitic ball that you can’t escape because you killed off all your friendships to get into it and now there’s no one to help you out if you’re not happy.”

The whole concept of this world was so intriguing to me. One day you go to sleep, and then come back as your worst nightmare. There’s a whole organization dedicated to the eradication of nightmares, and the way the history and events happening daily were described captivated me.

I won’t go into heavy detail, if you’re intrigued by this idea give it change, you won’t regret it.

Also, there’s no spice in this book. In case you were wondering. And yes, there’s romance, but that’ll be developed in the second book (at least I hope so).

“We approach people for all sorts of reasons. Most of them aren’t particularly deep. You sit next to a person in a classroom because you think she’s pretty. Or because he’s from the same church as you. Or because you like the vibe from the way they dress.” He shrugs. “At the beginning, it’s all shallow. It can’t be anything else because you don’t know each other yet.”

“There’s something about making a mockery of serious things that takes their power from them, makes them less frightening, less painful.”

I feel attacked by that last quote :)

You know how Gotham is inspired by New York City? But Batman is so iconic that it’s one of those facts that slip away and Gotham is it’s own famous city? Yeah that’s this book. I LOVED it! Not only the Neham <- Gotham <- New York trail but the monsters?! The world building?! The talk about cults and brain washing and the power of love in friendship?! Overcoming fears and being your own hero?! I know I’m like sporadically just listing everything I loved about this book like a question but seriously, so good and I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!

I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I picked this book up on a bit of a whim coz I loved the cover and was intrigued enough by the plot to want to read it. I ended up devouring it in less than 24 hours. I stayed up til almost 2am coz I could not put this book down.

This book is by no means a masterpiece. In fact, it’s somewhat heavy-handed at presenting and tackling the issues it brings up. It’s incredibly fast-paced which sometimes leads to reveals feeling somewhat unearned and sometimes the conclusions the characters come to feel a little too quick.

However, one thing this book does incredibly well is the character interactions. They genuinely had me laughing out loud at times. The main characters bounce off each other incredibly well and it is immensely enjoyable to read. Some of my favourite scenes are when the main character discusses the many interesting “quirks” of Newham as though they’re the most mundane of occurrences.

It was an incredibly easy book to read and I enjoyed every page.

I am greatly looking forward to the second book coming out soon and will probably be picking it up when it does.
