The magic system is interesting. I like this sudden added depth given this novel tying in the first. I appreciate the new second narration to add interest. Good building for the next novel but slow to get there for a big ending.

I feel like the first book did a disservice to this book by being SO good. Like, if this book had been preceded by anything else, it would be 5 stars through and through. But the first book just set the standard so high 😭. 

I think the pacing on this book just let it down a bit. It’s a classic second book—there’s a lot of setup going on. Everyone is standing on shaky ground, and any relationships formed are tenuous. It makes the characterization very interesting, but also harder to really root for anyone. Mostly I just wanted to get through this book and on to the next.

Second time reading this, and damn is it so good still. It's been my favorite series for a decade, and there is a reason for that!!!!

Rating: 4/5 stars

The second book in the Broken Earth trilogy continues the story of THE FIFTH SEASON.

I am really enjoying this trilogy! This one is a much slower burn than the first, and felt a bit like a filler or bridge novel from book one to two, but there was a great deal of character development and the introduction of new POVs, which I really appreciated. I loved to see the world beginning to fill out, and even though my brain hurts, I feel like I have a slightly better handle on how everything works after this book, which is a good thing.

There are also elements of this book that remind me of Catching Fire and Mockingjay from The Hunger Games series in a way I can’t really explain without spoilers but it’s a very specific and very niche vibe. All in all, I can’t wait for book three!
