solid, dense introduction to the history of photography, its place in art and documentary, and other theoretical/ideological ideas. i don't think i'd be super riveted if i read this on its own, but accompanied by other texts about photography, this book offers useful background and introduces some helpful ideas (i found the bit about semiotics and symbolism particularly interesting)!
