Διάβασα "την πλημμύρα" σε μετάφραση απο τις εκδόσεις Ποικίλη Στοά. Όποιος είναι θαυμαστής κ αναγνώστης του Emile Zola σίγουρα αυτό το βιβλίο δεν θα τον αφήσει αδιάφορο. Για ακόμα μια φορά χτίζει κ αποδομεί τους ήρωές του ο συγγραφέας. Από την χαρά περνούν στο θρήνο. Από τον πλούτο στην φτώχεια. Κι εδώ με αυτές τις δύο λέξεις δεν νοούνται μόνο τα πλούτη, περιλαμβάνεται καθετί που ο άνθρωπος οφείλει την ευημερία του ψυχική σε σωματική. Διαβάζοντας τις τελευταίες σελίδες το μυαλό μου πήγε στην Φεγγαροντυμένη στο "Κρητικό" του Σολωμού που εμφανίζεται στον αγαπημένο της... μια ανάλογη εικόνα καλλιεργείται κ στην Πλημμύρα του Ζολά.

I love french literature! Stumbled upon Émile Zola's Nana but wasn't quite sure what his writing style is. Thought I start with one of his novellas. Brilliantly written and kept me hooked till the end. A great start and thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely read his other titles in the future.

For completists (like me) only. Very slight, likely juvenalia, or senilia. It's been a while, but I don't recall Zola anywhere else using 1st person narration. Reminiscent of actual Zola. Despite my recent conclusion that translation of straightforward prose between similar languages is not a problem, I do wonder about this particular translation. I can't remember reading Zola in English, though presumably I read a volume or two before '93. Stilted.
