This book is a very good and solid representative of its genre - one of the better examples of it, in fact, and I really liked it as such. But there are 2 things that kept me from loving it:
  1. There are many tiny anachronisms or incongruous turns of phrase which kept yanking me out of the story - the worst of these irritations had to do with character actions and logic, which didn't feel right for either the historical setting or the internally constructed reality within the story itself. These issues had a stronger lasting power and prevented me from taking the story seriously or enjoying it fully.
  2. The book represents it's genre a little too well - it never ventures close to the genre-defined borders and that makes the story feel stale and bland. And, also, impossible to take seriously.
The book works as pleasant mindless entertainment and comfort read, but the story falls apart under the slightest scrutiny. Yet, I can imagine it being rereadable whenever something fluffy and mindlessly cute is required.
