This is an unusual book for the true crime genre and it was so refreshing. Extremely interesting and sad to learn about the brutal reality of being a lower class women in Victorian society. A story often untold but is so important. I'm so happy I read this book for my book club. I'll be recommending this one!!

Honestly I have nothing groundbreaking to say about this book, but despite how long it took me to read it (my ADHD and medication situation has been questionable at best, pls,,) I loved every bit of it. I haven't done any "deep dives" into anything Jack the Ripper related, and I'm glad to have read this before any other books on the matter. An extremely intelligent, heartfelt, and empathetic look into the lives of these women and their broader context in the society they were born into. Just... fucking bravo. I borrowed this one and can't wait to treat myself to it on my shelf.

Incredible look into the women who were cast aside by society long before their lives were taken. Thoroughly researched and wonderfully written.

I have read a few Jack the Ripper books, but this one does the best job of telling the stories of the victims. I was impressed with the meticulous research Ms. Rubenhold did. I was surprised to learn that the core facts most everyone thinks they know about the victims were in many cases inaccurate.
Finally Annie, Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary Ann (Polly), and Mary get their stories told in a respectful and humane way!

All I can say is, I'm glad I wasn't around in the 1800s.

I couldn't put it down, and while I wasn't reading it, I couldn't stop thinking and talking about it. Thank you to the author for a focus on the victims. The information and history about England at the time was also fascinating. A great book club book, with lots of discussion possibilities.

I was really excited for this book and while some parts were definitely interesting…I was bored. I don’t know why. Maybe I’ll try it again in the future.

I've not been adding comments recently, just rating but I have to say bravo to the author for bringing to life these 5 women (just prostitute's).
If you're looking for a book about jack the ripper this is not for you.
If you want to know how these women became victims (of society) regardless of who the ripper was, it's a must read.

This is an amazing, thoroughly researched look at the lives of the women discarded by a history of sensationalism and misogyny.
