"Sophie Rose, a tough and determined newspaper reporter, is the daughter of Bobby Rose, a suave, charming, and handsome gentleman who also happens to be a notorious big-time thief sought by every law-enforcement agency in the country. When the major Chicago daily where she works insists she write an exposé about her roguish father, Sophie refuses, quits her job, and goes to work at a small newspaper. Far from her onetime high-powered crime beat, she now covers local personalities such as the quirky winner of several area 5K runs whose trademark is goofy red socks.

Those red socks-with Sophie's business card neatly tucked inside-are practically all that's found after runner William Harrington's shredded corpse turns up in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, the victim of a mysteriously dramatic death by polar bear. With an unerring nose for a good story, Sophie heads north to Alaska.

What she doesn't realize is that her father's infamous reputation has spread even to the far reaches of Prudhoe Bay. Sophie's assigned a bodyguard-Jack MacAlister, a sexy FBI agent who grudgingly takes the assignment while recovering from an on-duty injury. But they will soon be fighting more than growing passion." (From Amazon)

Not my favourite in the series and the chemistry between Jack and Sophie was just meh.

What I really like with Garwood is that she is such a strong character writer. Especially when it comes to the females. I'm a huge critic when it comes to females and often finds them dumb, childish, meek and excessive. But never with Garwood. I receive pretty much what I expect and it never disappoint me. This one was just as good as always when it comes to the writing, character and such. The plot however I found a little weak. I really liked Sophie's history and enigmatic father but Jack could have used a little more work and the story a little more depth. I missed that ... umpf... in lack of better words.

Nothing bad really, just didn't earn the last star but certainly not a bad book in any means. This is the 7 book in the series about Buchanan-Renard family and it is safe to say, I will continue it.

This was good! I really liked Sophie, I like her relationships with her friends, I like that they have in-jokes and understandings. She built her own little family. She's part of a real world and has clear plans and ambitions. Her dad is a Chicago Robin Hood, pursuing rich criminals, Leverage-style. That's rad as hell, days are bleak, would appreciate that kind of hope today, frankly.

I don't love reading about allusions to animal abuse between each chapter, but at least she keeps it very short.

The big problem is that in this series all the male leads are in law enforcement. It's the point of the series, so that's on me I guess, but oh boy. They're all bossy and self-assured. And I think (hope) most of us are aware now that there are plenty of emergencies that are worsened by cops. Sophie was threatened by them as a child, and is constantly harassed and bothered by them as an adult, she's regularly bugged and monitored! Of course she has an "aversion," she should, that makes total sense! That's reasonable, I don't know why her friends think she needs to overcome it, she is able to accept Regan's partner and his close friends. Leave her alone.

I do not know why Sophie cares about the hero. We know he's celebrated for being good at shooting and killing people (yikes at the entire way that is handled, good grief!). He likes to pick at and argue with her. He's just so dull, I don't get it. It's a quick fun read if I just ignore him though.

This book took me a little to get into because it starts off with a little bit of background that doesn't yet have anything to do with the main characters, but then, like all Garwood books, it sucked me in. I think she's got a real gift for creating characters that are funny and flawed and make you care about the outcome. She's also great at writing suspense that keeps you on your toes, and wondering. Once I got into it, I couldn't stop. I have a thing for the sort of taming of the shrew kind of story, too, where the couple doesn't really like each other in the beginning and then can't get enough of each other. :) You may want to re-read Murder List before reading this one as a reminder of who the heroine and her friends are, but for the most part it can be read as a stand alone. All in all, I'd recommend it.

The 7th installment of this series did not disappoint! Although not all directly related, the intertwined characters and their stories creates a familiar atmosphere, yet brings fun new characters, problems, & locations (ALASKA) to create a great read!!!
