I liked re-reading this book as an adult. There's a clear follow on from the first 3 books and I'm able to see a clear timeline. Was an easy read like they all have been so far. Similarities to the second book with the secret passageways just in a different location.

Met de samenlezenwe-club waren we alweer aanbeland bij deel 4 van de De Vijf serie van Enid Blyton. Deze keer speelt het verhaal zich niet af in Kirrin-cottage, maar op het smokkelaarsnest. Dat betekent een andere omgeving, andere personages, maar een net zo spannend en leuk verhaal.
Je hebt van de boeken van De Vijf inmiddels meerder versies. De Nieuwere uitgaves zijn qua taalgebruik heel anders dan de versie die ik lees, die nog van de originele uitgave komt, dus alles wat ik in mijn recensie deel, is wel gebaseerd op deze oude uitgave. Wees je daarvan bewust voor je verder leest.
De Vijf op de smokkelaarsrots brengt wederom een hoop avontuur met zich mee. De oubollige schrijfstijl is nog precies hetzelfde, de hoofdpersonen zijn nog nagenoeg hetzelfde, de avonturen lijken in de basis op elkaar, maar elke keer is het verhaal net anders vorm gegeven. het feit dat ze buiten Kirrin-cottage gaan logeren, geeft een nieuwe ervaring aan de verhalen van De Vijf. Ze moeten zich nu redden op een plek die ze niet kennen, een plek waar ogenschijnlijk van alles plaats vind. Natuurlijk raken Julian, Dick, George, Annie en Timmy hier weer bij betrokken en ze maken weer de gekste dingen mee.
Persoonlijk vond ik dit deel weer leuker dan deel 2 en 3, puur omdat de setting veranderde en er ook dingen gebeurden die ik nog niet eerder had gelezen. Dit maakte het verhaal leuker en verrassender om te lezen. De vader van George laat in dit verhaal ook zien waarom ik zo'n zwak voor hem heb, terwijl ik me na deel 3 wel af begon te vragen waarom ik zo'n goed beeld van hem had. In deel 4 komt zijn betere deel weer meer naar voren. Timmy is in deel 4 de echte held van het verhaal. En je weet het bij mij, dieren zijn beter dan mensen, dus als Timmy de echte held mag zijn, is het boek voor mij eigenlijk al geslaagd.
Er staan in dit boek, of eigenlijk deze versie, wel dingen die in het heden eigenlijk niet meer kunnen. En dan heb ik het voornamelijk over de naam van Roetje, en de beschrijving van zijn persoon en karakter in het verhaal. Je zal het wel raden, hij is een getint jongetje en in die tijd waren de beschrijvingen van getinte mensen niet altijd even.. acceptabel.
Als kind heb ik deze boeken natuurlijk plat gelezen, ik kreeg ze ook voorgelezen. Dus voor mij zitten er enorme herinneringen aan het lezen van deze serie. Als je deze boeken voor het eerst leest, weet ik niet of je eenzelfde ervaring zal hebben. De boeken lijken allemaal op elkaar, zijn vrij voorspelbaar en lang niet altijd even geloofwaardig. Maar dit zijn prima jeugdboeken om de fantasie en het avontuur weer even te prikkelen dat je als kind ook gevoeld hebt. Daarom zal ik ze nog altijd aanraden aan de jeugd onder ons.
Je duikt met De Vijf op de smokkelaarsrots terug in de tijd. Ik in ieder geval wel. De schrijfstijl, de gewoontes van toen, de omgeving van Engeland die je sowieso al doet wanen in het verleden, alles aan De Vijf spreekt Nostalgie.
Ik heb weer enorm genoten van dit vierde deel en geef hem daarom ook 4 sterren!

I’ve just reread this for the first in many years because I found a beautiful copy in a second hand bookshop - and I really had a great time - it’s so dramatic, about everything.
There’s a lot you could say about the character of the men who are fathers in this story (Uncle Quentin and Mr Lenoir) and how their personality and temperament shape their families, often negatively (Uncle Quentin slacking on home maintenance almost ends fatally and Mr Lenoir seems so sketchy that kids just assume he’s involved and act accordingly)… and how the Mothers are demure to the point of having no personality but are very loved by their children… but I don’t know that I would necessarily spared this a single thought when I was racing through these stories as a kid (I do, however, remember being as outraged as George when she invariably got cut out of the action by the boys)
Anyway, the whole story is all drama, all the time - it’s wondering if Timmy is going to be ok in the secret tunnels because Mr Lenoir doesn’t like dogs in the house, it’s wondering if Block, the deaf servant is actually deaf, it’s wondering how many secret tunnels are accounted for and how many are yet to be discovered…
In parts of this, I wondered if Enid Blyton had a stepfather that she particularly detested - but I read her Wikipedia article - and there is definitely some tea there - as it made a point of mentioning that she did not attend the funeral of either parent (no mention of a step parent tho)
