Short, sweet, and to the point. If you are looking for a quick, gothic romance this is the book for you! Love a story about curses, a mysterious manor, strange deaths/disappearances, an estranged daughter, and a devilishly handsome man? If the answer is “yes”, then I definitely recommend this book.
.
I loved that the author was inspired by her grandmother’s folklore retellings from the Dominican Republic(originating from Africa).
.
The only thing that I felt I missed out on was the background into the history of the curse and the families. I wish that part had been a little more in depth.

Couldn’t get into the audiobook. Narrator had a thick accent that I couldn’t understand without concentrating and I listen at work. I’ll just read the book instead.

This had a lot of potential, but I just wanted the story to be developed a bit more. I thought the idea of making deals with the devil was fun and interesting and I liked that the story took place on an island. I wasn't prepared for the book to be so heavy at times which kind of threw me off. I liked River and thought he made an good contrast to Penelope. The Carnival and party setting also pulled me in. Overall, this was paced quickly, but it wasn't something I would pick normally. *I did receive this as part of a book box that I'm posting about.*
