I always enjoy when the main character in a book has some special sauce that allows them to tackle to conflict in the book in a unique or badass way, whether it be superior magic and/or fighting skills in a fantasy novel, or in this case, a superpowered brain brought about by a brutal sports injury. I loved how our main character, Amos Decker, was able to deduce the what, how, and why of the killer from things that no one else even considered or looked twice at. It kept me intrigued the entire time wondering what he was going to figure out next. As the reader, we didn't know things until Amos did. It was not one of those books where you're able to figure out what's coming, which I actually liked.

I do feel like there was a bit of a disconnect with how broken Amos was after the murder of his family. Don't get me wrong, that is and should be devastating, but the way he described his lack of understanding empathy or sympathy and how the hit had "robbed him of the things that made everyone human", it seems to me like the reaction he had would be more along the lines of someone that feels a wide range of human emotions, and feels them deeply.

This is the first book in the series and it was better than I expected. It kept me engaged in the storyline.

This book felt way darker than anything I've ever read by Baldacci. Serial killer arc, that chills you, disgusts you, but still keeps you turning the pages to get to the end. While I love reading the more spy-type Puller and Robie series, this one reminds me of his old gems like Simple Genius and Last Man Standing.

Audio book - I really enjoyed this audio book and it was read by some of my favorite narrators. I wanted to listen to the next Harry Bosch book, but the new guy tries to make Harry's voice gruff and it drives me crazy. I'm sure I'll go back to it at some point, but for now I'm going with Baldacci stories and as well all know, there will be a sequel with this character like always. This character was interesting and the story was interesting as well.

This book was a little disappointing. For one thing, I think that the author didn't need to remind the reader constantly of the protagonist's special abilities. It was a fact that was established, but it was like he tried too hard to sell that concept. Plot line was OK.

Interesting story. I enjoyed exploring the connection between Amos’ personal life and the crime and the criminal was fairly original with a complex backstory. The end felt a little rushed - confronting the two criminals against one another by pulling facts out of thin air? Seemed a little random.
