I have a love/hate relationship with this book. First of all, I listened to this on audiobook. This helped my impression of the book, since I tend to not like reading repetitive writing (I did not look back. I did not look back. I did not look back.) I feel like if I hear the phrase "my noise" one more time, I might kill someone. LOL I felt that the book was VERY formulaic in its writing and character development, and was a little overdramatic in places. The plot was a bit weak as well.

Having said that, I liked the premise of the story. A noise germ infects New World, and a dys-utopia results. A boy and his dog (who the boy can hear) are sent off to escape the horrors of a particular town. The boy comes to learn the truth about the noise virus. He befriends a girl whose family crashed on their way to this "New World."

I did like the characters, but on a personal note, was drawn to the book because of the dog aspect. The outcome of that was more than disappointing.

Edit after seven years! Was thinking about reading the rest of the trilogy but even with the distance of seven years I can't. Because... Manchee. Too cruel. And changed my rating for that reason too.

The plot is repetetive but it has some really great moments throughout which made it a worth while read. It's written in a kind of stream of conciousness which can get a little annoying and repeptitive but overall mae it a pretty interesting read. The author left a cliff-hanger at the end which mights force me to pick up the next book but I think I can wait a while. Hopefully whatever problems I had with this installment will be fixed in the next book.

I knew the author cause I'd read "A monster calls" so I knew I liked his prose. This book was actually written before the huge success of A monster calls, so I wanted to give it a go.
It was one of those books that stressed me out in the best possible way. I just really enjoyed the concept of Noise. Everyone in Prentisstown can hear and see everything anyone is thinking. Just imagine that for a second. How loud it would be, how completely you’d know everyone, whether you wanted to or not. I'll just leave it there.

Needless to say, I loved it.

The Knife of Never Letting Go is a solid story, a solid dystopia, too. However, I never felt connected to the story - nor the characters.
Todd was confused, with good reason, as he had never been told the truth about Prentisstown and The New World. He was strong, however, and he had a good moral compass, that's for sure.
Viola was alone, having arrived on New World with her parents, but then, having to figure things out on her own.
I will continue with the series, but I'm not as excited about it as I was before I read this story.

COYER Summer 2019 Treasure Hunt: Berls is a glutten for punishment when it comes to books sometimes. So read a book off of Goodreads Make You Cry. 3 POINTS

WOW, OKAY. how do I even start? This is more of a rant than an actual review but here we go?
In all honesty, this wasn’t the worst read of my life. If you want to read it, I won’t stop you. The concept was intriguing, but was executed poorly. After the first few chapters it felt super repetitive. I don’t leave a series unfinished, so I will be reading the next 2 books, but what do you even do from now on?
Why do I hate this book? It’s slow-paced, the MC is horribly unlikeable (seriously Todd from the first page you gave me the ick), it had cheap grasps at getting the reader to feel something, finally topped off with simple uninteresting “plot twists” every other chapter (mainly a weird amount of revival of all the nasty characters)
Every single one of those deaths were so cheap AND SO SO POINTLESS! I originally was going to give this a 3.5 but those later chapters? Made me ball my eyes out and that rating slowly went lower and lower the more I read.
Anyway, I hope Todd gets attacked by a crocodile next.
