Winter is more than just a season in this book, it's a character in its own right.

Sylvi is a young girl on an island that really only knows two seasons, Winter - which calls to her and burns coldly inside her, and a brief time of wet and thaw. This makes it hard to survive on an island that has been conquered and is now being stripped of its resources, a drug-like substance called kol. When her sister runs off to join the rebels, Sylvi has little choice but to take her rig, the Sylver Dragon, over some of the roughest ice roads as Winter starts melting away around them.

This book is a few YA cliches mashed with Ice Road Truckers and a hint of Mad Max: Fury Road. I've given it 3 stars because while it was entertaining, it felt like it was lacking. The characters feel a little flat. Some of the decisions they make felt like they didn't quite fit. And the characterizations of Winter felt either brilliantly unstable or unsteadily written. I wasn't entirely sure the author meant to characterize Winter the way they did.
I appreciated that the book didn't drop too many huge walls of expository text. While Sylvi felt a little slow on the uptake and stubborn, she still felt like a 17-year-old being torn between her worlds. The entire cast of the group in the truck was interesting even if they were a little flat. The romance that popped up was not the main focus but did feel a little odd. Some of the in-book explanation helps, but the sudden feelings development still felt a little out of the blue.

A sequel is expected, and the end of the book was clearly written with the sequel in mind, but I'm not sure yet if I'll read it.
